Prior area of activities is development of information and analytical background for forest management at federal and regional levels, decision making support, reporting of forest resources and Russian forestry to the international forest organizations (FAO, CBD, GAFR, Montreal process, European forests etc.).

The department comprises 3 sectors: GIS sector, Sector for forest stock dynamics monitoring, Sector for analytical investigation information provisions.
